I somehow believe in some people when they say, “you don’t know what you’re missing as long as you don’t have it yet”, or something pretty close to that. I guess this is pretty much applies to having a subwoofer for your listening moments.
I first heard a subwoofer in my brother’s car, it was mounted just behind the back passenger seats. It was a dual subwoofer setup. At that time, I just thought “wow these things can be used for massages!” During those times I definitely had no idea about tweeters, midrange, woofers and subwoofers. I just knew that it was something that kept vibrating for some reason when you play music through the radio.
As time progressed, there came a time where I had to buy speakers for my PC. At that time I decided to go with one that came with a subwoofer. I got the Altec Lansing ACS-45.1 2.1 multimedia speaker system. The system was comprised of two satellites along with a subwoofer. It served my needs and is actually still alive and kicking until now (except that the cloth and white cabinets are discolored).
There were times when I would go to a mall, browsing around computer shops and I would hear their speakers playing. There was simply just something missing from the sound that my ears were looking for. They were using those $5 to $10 2.0 speaker systems that usually come bundled free when you buy a computer system here in the Philippines. With those 2.0 speaker systems being displayed, I just couldn’t feel my chest thump even in a minor way, I couldn’t feel the drumbeats of the songs, the explosions in video games.
Fast forward a few years, I’ve decided to upgrade my old Altecs to new ones. I stayed loyal to Altec because they have certainly met my expectations of performance. I didn’t want to take the chance with another brand. This time around I got a 4.1 multimedia speaker system called the Altec Lansing 641. The listening experience vastly improved because the system was louder and had more bass (since the subwoofer has dual 6.5-inch drivers).
Fast forward a few years once more, we’ve decided to get a home theater in a box system for watching DVDs. But the developments on that will be for another day. Stay tuned!
