Disney has a supposed plan to increase the sales of Blu-ray movies. They are intending to offer Blu-ray movies two full days before the standard definition DVD counterpart. I am not thoroughly sure if that alone would lead to selling more because the Blu-ray version would still end up to be more expensive, but hey Disney thinks it’s worth it. We’ll just have to see if many consumers will embrace Disney’s early Blu-ray release plan. Blu-ray is currently in a tight battle against both standard definition DVDs and digital downloads.
Although Blu-ray offers better picture quality and higher bitrate lossless audio, many consumers are still not making the jump to the high definition format simply because DVDs are good enough for them. I, for one, have tried my shot at distinguishing the sound quality difference between Blu-ray and DVD, but I really had a hard time because they sounded practically the same to me. Sure, picture quality is indeed better but does that justify the much higher price?
This plan will reportedly start on April 5, 2009. This will probably somewhat affect the buying habits of buyers because some people simply have the urge to get movies on release day.
