I wonder what Sony is particularly trying to drive at with this advertisement of their latest Exmor R CMOS Sensor. First off, the ad praises Sony by saying it can take “Outstanding images even in low light.” Hah! But when you look closely at the image it’s being compared to, you’ll definitely notice some very significant differences.
- Sony-taken image is much more well-lit than the one taken with the “Conventional sensor”
- The conventional sensor photo is actually a simulated image, as indicated on the lower right text
- Sony says that their photo was taken using a wide-open aperture value of f/2.4; Conventional sensor photo does not indicate aperture value
- Both photos taken do not take into account other factors such as shutter speed, ISO setting (this baby can definitely introduce a lot of noise into your photo!)
If Sony truly wants to praise new technology that they’re integrating into their digital cameras, they should make comparisons that are fair-and-square. They should do the following:
- Take both photos from the same spot. Use the same settings (or at least make them very close since not all point-and-shoot cameras can do a f/2.4 aperture opening) for ISO, aperture and shutter
- Definitely do not use a simulated image as a basis for comparison
