After watching the Transformers by Michael Bay, have you ever wanted to see something even remotely similar to those gigantic computer-generated robots? Well, here’s something that’ll surprise you. A 60-year old Japanese engineer, Takahashi, built a giant beetle robot. (And no, the photo on the right is not the robot that he built. Gotcha! Didn’t I?) Photos and video after the jump.
Below is an animated photo, captured from the YouTube video, showing the first, second and final phase of the Kabutom RX robot, built by Takahashi.
The robot was reportedly showcased on Japanese TV yesterday. All I could decipher from the video was the measurements and the time it took him to build it. I may look Japanese but I certainly don’t speak the language.
The huge contraption measures 11 meters by 9.5 meters (or 36.3 feet by 31.35 feet) and weighs 15 tons! It was built by Takahashi alone. He worked on it for 11 years (he started 1998).
The quality on the materials he used on the Kabutom RX-03 are just amazing. The surfaces look smooth and totally clean. Even the cockpit, or whatever Takahashi calls it, looks slick! It has a couple of wheels along with six legs. Just look at that thing move! It may be slow, but it’s still… Wow! He even seems to have a remote control for the beetle bot.
