T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9700 (aka BlackBerry Onyx) reveals itself

The first official photo of the BlackBerry 9700 (also known as the BlackBerry Onyx) has come out in the open! It’s reportedly headed for T-Mobile (as indicated by the branding) sometime in November and will be the carrier’s first 3G-capable BlackBerry handset.

Rumored specifications of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 (aka BlackBerry Onyx) include all-new trackpad navigation (possibly similar to the E72), quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, UMTS/HSDPA, 480 x 360 resolution display, WiFi, full QWERTY keyboard, 3.2-megapixel auto-focus camera and of course, Bluetooth.

Aside from all these mentioned, the Onyx will also support WiFi calling, for use with T-Mobile’s HotSpot@Home service.

Verizon’s BlackBerry Storm price has dropped down to just $49.99! Seems like they are clearing out their remaining inventory to make way for the BlackBerry Storm 2.

Initial rumors point out that the Storm 2 will be making its debut on September. While no exact date has been announced yet, rest assured the wait time is almost over.

Before you decide to get one, remember that the Storm doesn’t have WiFi that the Storm 2 has been confirmed to have. If you haven’t seen what the BlackBerry Storm 2 looks like, head on over here to temporarily relieve your BlackBerry itch.

The BlackBerry Storm 2 was first rumored only to feature WiFi. Now, it’s pretty much confirmed!

RIM’s BlackBerry Storm 2 photos have been previously leaked but these photos look much better since there’s no glare involved and there’s also a minor software showcase.

Honestly, the device looks pretty huge, thick and heavy. Will RIM finally get the Storm right this time?

A RIM executive, according to Jason Wilk of TinyComb, confirmed that the smartphone company is indeed working on and has been looking into integrating a front-facing camera onto upcoming models of BlackBerrys for 2010. Even RIM’s latest smartphone, the BlackBerry Tour, doesn’t have a front-facing camera.

“As I said before, we are fortunate to have our relationships with many different carriers, some of which can handle something like live video-conferencing.”

“Video conferencing is something that could completely change the mobile landscape and it is something we have been thinking about and working on for quite some time. You will start seeing something early next year”.

CrackBerry forum member kurpaige ordered a BlackBerry Tour 9630 smartphone from Sprint but to his surprise, the box contained a Verizon-branded BlackBerry Tour instead!

Internally, the device is Sprint’s BlackBerry Tour indeed, as confirmed by the user. Even the bezel of the device is chrome (or the lighter bezel) as opposed to Verizon’s BlackBerry Tour, which has a darker bezel.

There would probably be some employees scratching their heads over this once the user decides to ask for support at a physical Sprint store location. Why the heck are you asking for support for a Verizon phone on a Sprint store!?

Makes everyone wonder what precautions Sprint will be taking in order to prevent this mishap from ever happening again.

Sprint requires processing of a $100 rebate before price drops down to $199.99 while Verizon doesn’t seem to specify any form of rebate in order to get it for the same price of $199.99. Both require a new line with two-year contract.

Some BlackBerry device photos have found their way onto the worldwide web and it appears to be the BlackBerry Storm 2! As far as I can see from the photos, there will be a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash and the buttons on the front seemed to have been made touch sensitive. If you look closely, the buttons on the bottom part are sort of integrated with the screen itself.

Jim Balsillie, CEO of RIM, indicates that RIM will be conjuring up a followup to its touchscreen handset, the BlackBerry Storm.

The BlackBerry Storm 2 will reportedly incorporate WiFi (unavailability of which, was a big letdown for purchasers of the Storm) and a 5 megapixel camera.

The BlackBerry Storm ranked 3rd among the best-selling smartphones for the 1st quarter of 2009. But that was due to aggressive marketing rather than sheer public appeal (iPhone anyone?)

If RIM wants to do things right with the BlackBerry Storm 2, they should look at what their touchscreen phone competitors are offering. Research, study and possibly add even more useful features that consumers will be able to exploit and not find anywhere else. Hopefully, RIM will listen to consumer complaints and do things right with the second iteration of the Storm. I’ve read negative reviews all over the web, so I’m extremely surprised it was still able to climb up the charts as the 3rd best-selling smartphone last quarter.

BlackBerry handsets are extremely popular due to their push e-mail service capabilities. This allows businessmen and other people on the go to keep track of their e-mail correspondence effectively, no matter where they are.

Rumor has it Verizon will be launching the BlackBerry Storm 2 sometime in September 2009. It will reportedly feature WiFi, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera, 1GB of RAM, a HD-like quality screen.

In comparison, the current BlackBerry Storm has the following:

No WiFi capability (What a real letdown! What was RIM thinking?!)
3.15 megapixel autofocus camera
128MB of RAM
3.25-inch screen with a resolution of 360 x 480

While the WiFi, camera and screen upgrades are certainly likely. I highly doubt that the BlackBerry Storm 2 will get 1GB of RAM. Touchscreen improvements have also been mentioned. I think they will be tweaking response time and overall usability of the screen since the Storm was their first touchscreen-based device.
