Pioneer BDP-09FD: World’s first THX-certified Blu-ray Disc Player

Constructed with the highest-grade components and electronic circuitry, the Pioneer BDP-09FD THX-certified Blu-ray Disc Player surely can put a dent on your wallet. The device is certainly no slouch in the weight department, coming in at a whopping 30 lbs.

The enclosure is mostly made from solid steel and aluminum, which should be a given because of the price tag. The BDP-09FD is also BD-Live ready, has a rear ethernet jack, and features the company’s KURO linking technology.

“Pioneer recognizes THX as the industry benchmark for rigorous, unbiased testing and endorsement of high performance home theater products,” said Russ Johnston, executive vice president of home entertainment business solutions group at Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. “As true A/V specialists, our engineers have worked relentlessly to craft a full line of products that rival the movie theater experience, which not only meet Pioneer’s strict principles for faithful reproduction of content, but now feature THX certification.”

I hardly believe that the $2,200 MSRP for a BDP-09FD will make Blu-ray movies look and sound a lot better. Without a doubt, this would definitely look great in tandem with Pioneer’s current top-of-the-line A/V receivers.

After finally admitting defeat to Blu-ray and filing an application with the BDA, Toshiba is announcing the availability of its first ever Blu-ray disc player which is set to debut on November.

Toshiba’s BDX2000 will feature BD-Live(TM) (Profile 2.0), 1080p/ 24 fps Full HD Video Output, AVCHD Playback, Toshiba REGZA-LINK(R) (HDMI-CEC) and is fitted with a SD card slot.

The Blu-ray player also has support for enhanced audio formats such as Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

MSRP for the Toshiba BDX2000 Blu-ray Disc Player is set at $249.99.

Toshiba has finally gives in to the powers of Blu-ray after announcing about a month ago, that they will be developing a Blu-ray player. The Japanese electronics behemoth has already filed an application to join the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) due to the recent growth in digital devices supporting the Blu-ray format, combined with market demand from consumers and retailers alike.

Toshiba aims to give consumers Blu-ray players along with Blu-ray drive-loaded notebooks.

Some information on the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA):

In 2005, the Blu-ray Disc Founders announced the creation of the Blu-ray Disc Association. The Blu-ray Disc Association, or BDA, re-incorporates the Blu-Ray Disc Founders group, but is now a voluntary membership group open to any corporation or organization with an interest in creating, upholding and/or promoting the BD formats. Those organizations engaged in research, development and/or manufacturing of any BD products or interested in developing and improving the BD formats are also encouraged to pursue membership. Furthermore, the group welcomes any company wanting to learn more about the format as it evolves.

Toshiba has finally succumbed to the success fo Blu-ray over HD DVD. The high-definition format war ended last February 2008 when Warner Bros. decided to side with Blu-ray.

Although Blu-ray sales have been increasing, the format has still very far to go in order to overtake the market share for DVDs. Toshiba, after a year and a half of HD DVD’s demise, is finally planning to join the Blu-ray bandwagon by releasing a Blu-ray disc player before 2009 ends. The company also has revealed considerations in offering a Blu-ray recorder for the Japanese market.

Hopefully, something good will come out of Toshiba’s entrance to the Blu-ray market, low priced players and enhanced features, among other things.

The Oppo BDP-S83 Blu-ray Disc Player is available in Europe via OppoShop or Amazon UK. CRT Projectors. They are not an official Oppo dealer and their units of the BDP-83 are imports from the US. Price starts at £514.00. [Thanks to Marcus for the heads up!]

They’re priced pretty much the same from both sources, OppoShop is offering it for €403 (inclusive of shipping) and Amazon UK is offering it for £355 (inclusive of shipping). Take your pick, you can’t go wrong either way.

The highly anticipated Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player is now available from the guys at Oppo themselves. You can also order the BDP-83 via Amazon.

Oppo initially offered the player via an Early Adoption Program (EAP) and also gave a chance for those who were left out of the EAP. This time, everyone can have their go at it.

List price is $599.99 but it seems that they’re taking orders now for just $499.99. Estimate shipping date is anytime today until July 3.

If you want something region free out-of-the-box, then get the Momitsu BDP-899 instead. You’ll lose the awesome DVD upscaling that Oppo’s are known for though.

Sharp UK is set to intro a low power consumption Blu-ray player, the BDHP22H. Funny thing is, Blu-ray players don’t really consume much electricity except for the PlayStation 3. Engadget indicates that this low-power Blu-ray player consumes only 0.7W during standby and 20W while playing your favorite high-definition movies.

The Sharp BDHP22H Blu-ray Disc Player is priced at £199.99 and becomes available towards the end of this month.

The Panasonic DMP-BD15 portable Blu-ray player features Viera Cast functionality which allows you to connect to various internet sites such as Google Picasa, YouTube, and others. It also has a SD card slot for viewing photos and videos (no mention of what file types are supported though). The battery is rated for 3 hours of use.

Watching high definition on a 8.9-inch WSVGA resolution screen is simply not worth it since you won’t be able to see the extra details that Blu-ray has to offer. You’re better off getting a portable DVD player. Blu-ray is only worth it for screens 42-inch and above.

The only nice thing I can say about this device, is that it can be used as a small-footprint standalone Blu-ray player if you choose to. Output going to the television will be via HDMI. It also reportedly supports HD-Audio codecs.

The Panasonic DMP-BD15 portable Blu-ray player is now available through various retailers for $799.99.

Thinking about getting one? Consider purchasing a 32-inch flat panel television and a Blu-ray player instead.

Tired of being limited on your Blu-ray movie purchasing due to region locks? Behold the Momitsu BDP-899, the first all-region Blu-ray player! The Oppo BDP-83 might also be an all-region Blu-ray player but its availability is still prety much limited.

The only downside I can see with this Blu-ray player is if you require 7.1 or 5.1 analog audio outputs. The Momitsu BDP-899 only has analog stereo outputs.

The Momitsu BDP-899 all-region Blu-ray player is attractively priced at $349.99 and is available from xPCgear. Thing is, are you willing to fork out that much cash for a brand that you hardly even know (or heard of)?
