Nokia E72 gets FCC approval

The Nokia E72 apparently has just been given approval by the FCC, which means that it’ll be arriving in US stores soon. The photo shown above is of an unbranded E72, expect to pay a pretty penny for one of these if carriers are not going to subsidize the particular model.

Expect to pay around between $400 to $500 (personal estimate, based on previous prices of the E71, E61i, E61) for an unbranded handset. The Nokia E72 features a 5 megapixel camera along with an all-new optical trackpad for navigation.

FCC documents show that the device will utilize HSPA 850/1900 along with quadband EDGE support within the USA. It also supports HSPA 2100 for when you leave the USA.

The E72 was announced a couple of days ago by Nokia. It inherits all the good things from its older brother, the E71, and enhances some components such as upping the megapixel count from 3 to 5, inclusion of a standard 3.5mm jack, internal memory storage increase from 110MB to 250MB, up to 16GB microSD card expansion, faster HSDPA speeds, a processor almost twice as fast (E71 uses 369Mhz, E72 uses 600Mhz) and an optical trackpad for navigation. And of course, the E72 runs on Symbian Series 60 3rd Edition with Feature Pack 2.

Below is a video taken by A Bugged Life, which shows how the all-new optical trackpad functions during menu and gallery navigation. During the latter part of the video, a size comparison is done between the E71 and E72.

Perhaps there won’t be a Nokia E71i, but there will be a Nokia E72 as shown here. The E72 features a 5 megapixel camera (watch the video and see the back area of the smartphone), a QWERTY keyboard very much the same as the E71 and a touch-sensitive/optical navigation pad.

Here’s a video from Nokia Conversations (Nokia themselves), I find something weird with the video though. The Nokia E72 is using S60v3 with Feature Pack 1 only. Scratch that thought, it does indeed use S60v3 with Feature Pack 2, just like the E71x.

Possible pricing for the Philippines is believed to be around P22,000 (around $460 USD). The Nokia E72 is set for a 3rd quarter 2009 release.
