Nokia N97 Mini becomes official

Following a realistic, official looking leaked image, Nokia has unveiled the a-bit-smaller-version of the N97… the N97 Mini.

The Nokia N97 Mini features a 3.2-inch screen (down from 3.5-inches), 8GB internal storage (down from 32GB), smaller battery capacity at 1200mAh (down from 1500mAh) and is essentially every bit the same as the currently available N97 except for the following:

slight change in dimensions
ditching the directional pad from the slide-out keys
slight rearrangement of the keys
pre-installed Lifecasting with Ovi software, which is partnered with the largest social network in the world, Facebook

The Nokia N97 Mini will be available at select markets starting October for €450 or $639 USD.

The Nokia N97 Mini is really not that much smaller than its older brother, the N97. It’s just roughly shorter by 4mm (height), 3mm (width) and 2mm (depth).

The Nokia E52 is now available at Nokia Stores in the Philippines, nationwide. The E52 is every bit as competent as its predecessor, the Nokia E51.

As you can see, pretty much everything is in favor of the Nokia E52… Except for the internal memory — which shouldn’t matter because both devices are expandable via a microSD card, infrared port — which also shouldn’t matter because infrared (IR) is on its last leg, and of course price — the E52 is definitely much more expensive considering it’s a newer model.

The Nokia E52 is certainly a powerful device. If you need a business-centric smartphone but require QWERTY keypads, I suggest you wait for the Nokia E72 which features an optical trackpad in addition to full QWERTY. You can read an in-depth review of the Nokia E52 at GSM Arena.

Prices indicated are based on information from a sales representative of the Nokia Store at Fort Bonifacio. Currently, only the Metal Grey Aluminum variant is available. I’ve been told that the E52 has been available since last week.

As any avid mobile phone addict in the Philippines would know, you can get this (or any particular phone for that matter) cheaper via your friendly suki store (or of course… Greenhills, the Mecca for mobile phones), for a slightly cheaper price. Do chime in if you decide to get one!

Shown here is the first official press photo of the Nokia N97 Mini from Be Geek. Looks like it will sport a mocha brown color of some kind.

Evidently absent is the directional pad on the left-hand side of the QWERTY keypad. There is also a mild keypad layout makeover along with the addition of directional keys on the right-hand side.

The Nokia N97 Mini is not that much smaller compared to the N97 as can be seen on the photos below.

Nothing is official yet, but rumored downgrades/upgrades include the following: smaller mass storage capacity (8GB or 16GB instead of 32GB), smaller screen (3-inch instead of 3.5-inch) and lastly, free internal memory (RAM) would supposedly tally up to 280MB on the N97 Mini as opposed to only 50MB on the N97.

Certainly you would think, what on earth is Nokia thinking by trying to release their own netbook/mini laptop? Hasn’t everybody else done the same thing already?

What differentiates the Nokia Booklet 3G from most netbooks is that it has an HDMI output port (which reportedly can be used to output HD video) along with on-board A-GPS and 12-hour battery life! Netbooks typically last only around 6 to 8 hours with 6-cell batteries and they aren’t entirely capable of HD video playback.

The Nokia Booklet 3G is also 3G/HSPA ready for when you don’t have access to a WiFi hotspot/connection. It will still be powered by an Intel Atom processor which makes it extremely doubtful to be able to play HD video. Other features of the product include a 10-inch HD ready screen, memory card reader, Bluetooth, 1.25 kilogram weight and front-facing camera.

Nokia can very well make the Booklet 3G a worldwide hit if it indeed delivers the product as currently being pitched. I mean, 10-inch HD ready display, HDMI output for HD video, 12-hour battery life, integrated A-GPS, 3G/HSPA connectivity… What more can you ask for?!

The Nokia 5800 has quite a number of variants now: XpressMusic, Star Trek Edition, Comes with Music Edition, and now… the Navigation Edition.

Nokia’s 5800 Navigation Edition is pre-loaded with Ovi Maps and lifetime licenses for voice-guided driving and walking navigation for a particular region. To set you on your way, Nokia is including a car charger and and car kit in the standard package.

The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition with lifetime guidance is set to retail for €285 or $410 USD during the 3rd quarter of 2009.

The FCC was recently graced by the presence of a device dubbed as the Nokia 5800i XpressMusic. The only improved aspect of which, appears to be the camera now indicates a focus distance of 4.6mm instead of the previous 3.7mm.

WiFi is also believed to have been left out of the device. Nowadays, WiFi is basically a feature necessity when a person is shopping for a phone. It definitely beats me as to why Nokia would even think of removing such a feature from a touchscreen device.

Shown above are shots of the side, top and bottom parts of the device. Everything is indeed aesthetically the same as the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. I guess we’ll have to wait it out until official announcements have been made before we assume the worst.

Nokia Surge to be released worldwide as 6760

Nokia will be releasing the Surge as the Nokia 6760 in locations other than the United States. The 6760 is every bit the same as the Nokia Surge, except that the former has a slightly higher megapixel count. 6760 features a 3.2 megapixel shooter while the Surge only shoots in 2 megapixels.

The landscape 6760 slide sports a 2.4-inch QVGA display, QWERTY keypads, 3.2-megapixel snapper and support for up to 8GB of storage with microSD (it comes with a 2GB card). Talk time is a healthy five hours, though with all that messaging functionality it’s the 500 hours standby time that’ll have bigger appeal. The 6760 also comes with A-GPS which serves up mapping treats through 3D landmarks and terrain mapping.

The Nokia 6760 will be available on the 3rd quarter of 2009 for €199 or approximately $283 USD before subsidies and taxes. It will initially be available in black. If you’re lucky enough, your country might get red and white variants later this year.

Nokia E72 gets FCC approval

The Nokia E72 apparently has just been given approval by the FCC, which means that it’ll be arriving in US stores soon. The photo shown above is of an unbranded E72, expect to pay a pretty penny for one of these if carriers are not going to subsidize the particular model.

Expect to pay around between $400 to $500 (personal estimate, based on previous prices of the E71, E61i, E61) for an unbranded handset. The Nokia E72 features a 5 megapixel camera along with an all-new optical trackpad for navigation.

FCC documents show that the device will utilize HSPA 850/1900 along with quadband EDGE support within the USA. It also supports HSPA 2100 for when you leave the USA.

I guess it’s about time Nokia came up with something to rival T-Mobile’s Sidekick LX 2009. Nokia’s “socially supercharged” Surge features a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard and runs on the Symbian S60 interface. It also features a 2.4″ QVGA (320 x 240) resolution screen, HSDPA connectivity up to 3.6Mbps, 2 megapixel camera, microSD expansion up to 8GB. It runs on a 1500mAh battery, same as the E71x if I’m not mistaken, which definitely means that you’ll get loads of talk and standby time.

Not quite sure how well this is going to sell since Symbian is not widely accepted across the United States.

The Nokia Surge will be available online and in-store via AT&T starting July 19, 2009. It will be priced at $79.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate, which comes in the form of an AT&T Promotion Card. As always, a two-year service agreement is required.

The Nokia Surge offers multimedia and entertainment features, including:

2.0 megapixel camera — Customers can capture quality photos with color camera and 4X digital zoom

AT&T Navigator — AT&T Navigator provides audible turn-by-turn directions, monitors traffic and alerts users when there is a slowdown or incident

AT&T Mobile Music — Customers can listen and download their favorite music from Napster Mobile, eMusic Mobile, XM Radio and more over the air

AT&T Video Share — The first-ever service in the U.S. that allows users to share live video over wireless devices while participating in a voice call

JuiceCaster — Customers can share videos and pictures from their wireless device to the Web’s most popular sites including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr
