
The Sony PS3 Slim is scheduled to hit stores on September 1st but according to Engadget, it has already appeared at Best Buy stores in Florida.
Be prepared for a nerdgasm as iFixit details a complete disassembly on the PS3 Slim. It’s worth noting that the only parts that take up a huge amount of space are the fan and the Blu-ray optical drive.

Aside from having a 120GB hard drive, Sony’s PS3 Slim is also able to bitstream high definition audio codecs such as Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

A couple of weeks ago, there was a good indication that Sony might soon give the PS3 a long-overdue price cut. Today, Sony has finally given in to insistent consumer demand on lowering the price of their Blu-ray powered console. The $100 price reduction officially brings down the PlayStation 3′s price to $299.

Sony has imposed a diet regimen on the PlayStation 3 which has led to the birth of a slim version, the PS3 slim. It comes with a 120GB hard drive, consumes 34% less power and is 32% smaller.

Reports have been circulating that the cost of producing/manufacturing a Sony PlayStation 3 has gone down by as much as 70%, which brings the cost of production to $240.

Sometime last month, Mike Hickey of Janco Partners, made remarks that Sony needs to give a Playstation 3 price cut in order not to shoo away developers from the console. He apparently suggested that Sony do away with the Blu-ray component of the PS3 in order to make a price cut happen. It was a pretty stupid remark, considering that the PS3 is based on Blu-ray.
