Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut (DVD/Blu-ray) to be released on November 3, 2009

More concrete details for the 5-disc DVD/4-disc Blu-ray release of Watchmen: Ultimate Collector’s Edition has been released by Warner.

The Ultimate release of Watchmen also includes Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic which can be purchased separately in DVD or Blu-ray format.

What your essentially getting with this Watchmen release is a longer movie, with the animated Tales of the Black Freighter woven seamlessly into the movie for added depth to the plot/story, and a couple of additional features here and there.

The DVD release will come in 5-discs while the Blu-ray will come in 4-discs. Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut is scheduled for release on November 3, 2009 which is a full month early from the initial December 2009 announcement in the flier.

Magnavision Home Video will be releasing five different versions of Zack Snyder’s Watchmen for the Philippines:

1-Disc (in standard DVD packaging)
2-Disc (in standard DVD packaging)
2-Disc (in special Rorschach Mask Packaging, possibly made with real cloth)
2-Disc (in special Dr. Manhattan Mask Packaging, possibly using glow-in-the-dark material)
2-Disc (in SteelBook packaging)

In addition to these, the home video distribution company will also be releasing Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter and Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic.

Shown below are the preliminary artwork which were provided by a representative of Magnavision:

No release date or pricing has be announced by Magnavision as of yet.

Update (August 10, 2009): Apparently, the final SteelBook art will be the yellow smiley face with maroon-colored, dripping blood. Pricing has also been released. I must say that the SteelBook and special character packaging are quite expensive.

Watchmen: The End is Nigh The Complete Experience for the PlayStation 3 is the first Blu-ray film and game hybrid which includes both the game, Watchmen: The End is Nigh Parts 1 and 2, and the film, Watchmen: Director’s Cut on full 1080p high-definition Blu-ray.

The game comes in one disc; the film, in another disc and Amazon states that it contains an exclusive collectible poster and History of Watchmen Timeline.

It would be safe to assume that the movie disc only includes the Director’s Cut and none of the special features. Take note that you’re not actually saving anything from buying the hybrid because if you read below, the game only costs $29.99 for the Xbox 360 while the hybrid for the PlayStation 3 costs $49.99. The latter is available on Amazon right now for $3 less, making it $46.99.

Providing Watchmen fans with a variety of purchase options, the game will be offered in the following formats.

Watchmen: The End is Nigh The Complete Experience is a distinct, retail Blu-ray Hi-Def game and film hybrid which will include the Watchmen: The End is Nigh Parts 1 and 2 video game and the Watchmen: Director’s Cut on Blu-ray. Watchmen: The End is Nigh Part 2 will be available for download on PC on July 29 and PlayStation®Network on July 30 for a retail price of $14.99, and on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360 on August 26 for 1200 Microsoft Points.

Watchmen (Director’s Cut) (Amazon Exclusive and Digital Bundle + Digital Copy and BD-Live) [Blu-ray] comes in a nice and extremely unique Nite Owl Ship packaging that sort of resembles Wall-E’s head. The base of the Nite Owl miniature ship, houses the discs.

This Amazon exclusive comes with 3-discs of which the details are revealed below. Only the Director’s Cut, which is 24 minutes longer, is included in the first Blu-ray disc. If you really want the theatrical cut, you will have to settle for the single-disc DVD version.

When you’re into DVD and Blu-ray collecting, sometimes multiple releases by film companies just ticks you off, especially when they make double dips not even 6 months after the first release of the movie.

Watchmen runs 162 minutes on the theatrical cut, 186 minutes on the director’s cut and only-God-knows-how-long on the director’s cut with Tales of the Black Freighter integrated into it. The UCE will also include a new commentary along with more than 2 hours of bonus content/features.

The flier was found, on their early copy of the Blu-ray release, by the guys over at TheHDRoom. No exact word on whether Watchmen: 5-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition (UCE) will also be available on standard definition DVD.

You can go to Amazon to pre-order the ones that are going to be released on July 21st. Watchmen: 5-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition (UCE) will be released on December 2009, just in time to milk your holiday money-filled wallet.

Update (July 22, 2009): The ultimate director’s cut (or whatever you guys want to call it) will run 205 minutes according to Watchmen director, Zack Snyder.
